The Red House is the home of the Swannanoa Valley Art League (SVAL), a non-profit organization of local artists and art patrons. Founded in 1967, SVAL is one of the longest-established art leagues in Western North Carolina. We welcome all established and aspiring artists, and those who love and support the arts, to join us!

Our Mission

Our mission is to cultivate a vibrant and inclusive artistic community, providing a unique space where creativity flourishes, artists thrive, and the transformative power of art enriches the lives of all who engage with us. We strive to be a vibrant community hub providing engaging art experiences through our gallery, our classroom learning for all ages, and our studios where visitors can see art in creation. We aim to instill a lifelong appreciation for creativity and empower the next generation of artists to express themselves confidently.

Our History

The Swannanoa Valley Art League started in 1967 at Black Mountain's historic Monte Vista Hotel.

Mary Gilbert, who was attending a luncheon, was struck by the unusual abundance of creative expression blossoming in this group of women. A noted artist from Pennsylvania who had retired to Black Mountain, Mrs. Gilbert lost no time in urging her fellow artists to form the Swannanoa Valley Art League (SVAL) providing opportunities for regular displays of members' work. Our present venue on Cherry Street takes its name from the Red Farmhouse next to the Monte Vista where our Gallery was located for over 12 years. Our membership extends to the Asheville area arts community, and has established itself as an integral part of Western North Carolina's art community. Additionally, the SVAL is a 501(c)(3) non-profit with an art education mission, especially teaching and inspiring youth in the arts.
