Introduction to Pastel Portraits from Life

Date: Wednesday, May 15, 2024

Time: 11:00am – 3:30pm

Instructor: Lisa Steffens

Workshop Fee: $75

Required Model Fee: $15 (to be paid directly to instructor)

Optional Materials Fee: $10 (to be paid directly to instructor)

This one-day workshop offers a dynamic exploration of observational pastel painting, focusing on the intricacies of working with a live model. Through color exercises, proportion studies, and material techniques, students develop the ability to capture the human head convincingly with pastels. Additionally, students receive guidance in creating engaging and expressive portraits. Regardless of prior experience, participants emerge from this workshop with a heightened understanding and proficiency in this captivating yet demanding genre.

The hour before the model arrives provides an excellent opportunity for students to acquaint themselves with each other, explore fine art pastel pieces, and delve into various soft pastel techniques through discussion and demonstration. The non-critical critique session at the end allows for constructive feedback and reflection on the pieces created during the class, fostering growth, and learning in a supportive environment.

This workshop includes:

  • Tabletop easels
  • Instruction
  • Proportion handouts

The optional materials fee includes:

  • One sheet of sanded paper
  • A packet of 6 Sennelier portrait pastels
  • Charcoal
  • Paper towels

An excellent portrait can be created from the six pastels supplied, but should you wish to, please feel free to bring your favorite colored soft pastels to class to supplement the packet of six. I will have a few extra colors on hand as well.

Prerequisite:
Some drawing or painting experience would be helpful, but beginners are welcome!

Please bring something to drink and snacks or sandwiches for our break.

Workshop limited to 8 students.
