RED HOUSE CONTENT POLICY - For Review

The Swannanoa Valley Art League (SVAL) acknowledges and values the diverse nature of artistic expression and recognizes the importance of maintaining a respectful and inclusive environment. This policy is established to provide guidelines for the display of artworks that may include nudity or violence in SVAL-sponsored exhibitions, rental studio and gallery areas, and online platforms.

Our artists are reminded that our gallery is visited by guests of all ages, and that we do not have facilities to segregate sensitive content to an "adults-only" area. While our exhibitions are curated, our resident artists are responsible for the work they display on rental walls and shelves, and in studios, print bins and card racks. We ask our resident artists to carefully consider the appropriateness of all art they choose to display.

Guidelines for Artists - Nudity

NO SEXUAL THEMES. This means no displays of sexual acts of any kind, and no other pornographic or explicit sexual posing or displays.

NO GRATUITOUS NUDITY. A nude submission should possess artistic intent and merit. "Gratuitous nudity" is a judgement that applies to artworks in which the only evident purpose of the work is to display a person’s private parts.

NO NUDE DEPICTIONS OF MINORS. Artworks featuring nudity involving minors are strictly prohibited, even within the context of art.

Guidelines for Artists - Violence

NO GRATUITOUS VIOLENCE. Works that include violent imagery must clearly serve a thoughtful artistic, historical, educational, or critical purpose rather than gratuitously celebrating or glamorizing harm.

NO GRAPHIC DETAIL. Extremely graphic or gory depictions (e.g., explicit bodily injury, dismemberment, or excessive blood) are discouraged and may be declined.

NO PROMOTION OF REAL-WORLD HARM. Art that encourages, instructs, or glorifies violence toward identifiable groups or individuals will not be accepted.

NO ANIMAL CRUELTY. Works that depict harm, cruelty or distress to animals will not be accepted.

Our exhibition curators and gallery management reserve the right to decline or remove any artwork that is deemed inappropriate for display. If an artist disagrees with a decision made under this policy by gallery management or a curator, they may appeal the decision to the Gallery Committee or SVAL Board at the next regularly scheduled meeting.
